The discovery of God begins when we realize that there is nothing in this world that can fully satisfy us. We remain unsatified not because the world is not wonderful, nor because it does not give us enormous pleasure and joy. We remain unsatisfied because we have been made for so much more than this world. There is no final good here in the created world. The discovery of God begins when we realize that we must look beyond our world and all its good to its source. We must learn to withhold ourselves from this world, refusing to give ourselves to it, because the world cannot give us what we crave. To withhold ourselves from the world is to continue to eat and drink, work and save, laugh and cry, fail and achieve, and at the same time to know that fullness of life cannot be attained.
