So what do we do when people in our lives are the second of the two kinds of people described in the quote below?
'There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, in the end, "Thy will be done." All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. To those who knock it is opened.'
--C.S. Lewis, The Great Divorce
I've concluded that we must let them go. The parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15 has been helpful. We release them to their choices, however damaging they may be, but we don't stop loving them. We are always there--like the father in the parable--with outstretched arms, ready to welcome them Home, if/when they "come to [their] senses."

the word choice, "come to their senses" is a bit misleading. I think what you meant to say is "when the Holy Spirit moves them," which is another way of saying the same thing, except that it's more theologically appropriate.
It's in quotes because it's directly from the parable in Luke 15. I agree that this coming to our senses is the work of the Spirit, but wished to use the language of the story; sometimes stories aren't "theologically appropriate." :)
good point! look at me trying to be all reformed and then getting burned by scripture! =)
