Paintings

Recently I've been able to do a bit more painting. I give a lot of credit for that to the Arts Group that we've started at my church. It's nothing fancy, but it's given me a dedicated time and space to create once a month.
The first painting and detail are from a Greek Orthodox icon I copied. I've been interested in icons for a few years now and a friend recommended a very good book of them. This image is called "The Lamenting Virgin" and its a picture of the post-crucifixion (pre-resurrection) Mary, holding her hands in the same position in which she last held her son after he was taken off the cross. It's a sad, poignant moment, and one that is easy to imagine her having.

The second painting is another one of my experiments with squares and colors. This is acrylic with some colored lines added in with oil pastels. I've done a few of these now over the last couple of years and find I enjoy playing with the color compositions.
(My i-phone photo taking skills are not the best--I think I cut off some of the painting.)
I hope to post more o
f these as they are created and maybe I'll throw some older works up as well.
