Bono's still preaching, he just loves to hide his points behind a wall of misdirection.
I've personally always felt the hubris of the song. (Think Lewis: "the first principle of hell is 'I am my own.'") But I've heard the older Frank sing the song, and I think there is that regret...maybe. Frank was a tough old bastard.
I don't "know" Frank's life the way that I do Bono's, so I can't comment on his tone when singing. But it's easy for me to imagine Bono--with his understanding of his fallenness--singing those words from a position of regret, humility, or even bemusement.
And I must admit I never thought of the song as anything other than cocky.
